A teenager in Arizona who hopes to one day attend culinary school is preparing for a statewide competition and is getting some tips from professional chefs.

A Payson high school student named Justin Richardson is getting ready to compete in an advanced-level cooking competition that will take place later this month, according to PaysonRoundup.com. Richardson currently works at a restaurant called Gerardo's Italian Bistro.

Richardson will be competing against another student chef named Brett Goodwin, and both hope to be named U.S. Foodservice Student Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

Richardson has been training with two professionals named Devon Wells and Glenn Humphrey who both teach in culinary arts programs. The student chef first had to create and menu and then learn to prepare its items, says the website.

A career in the culinary arts is a popular choice for young people. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that 37 percent of cooks and other food preparation workers are below the age of 24. People committed to such a career have the option of becoming certified by the ACF.
