Virtual Recipe Boxes Appeal to High-Tech Chefs

Whether you've been to cooking school or you're simply an enthusiastic home cook, keeping track of recipes can quickly turn into a nightmare of misplaced recipe cards and food-stained, scribbled-on printouts. In a recent article, Associated Press Business Writer, Deborah Yao reviewed three downloadable recipe-tracking programs sure to whet the appetites of high-tech chefs: eChef, Living Cookbook, and BigOven.
The easy-to-use eChef, which enables users to compose, organize, share, and print recipes, sells for $39.95, and provides an interface for recipe management similar to that used in digital music software. Living Cookbook can be purchased for $34.95 and boasts a long list of features, including training tutorials, nutrition data and the ability to format and print your own cookbook.
With a large toolbox of social networking features and a lower price tag of $29.95, BigOven received the top recommendation. User-created recipes and videos can easily be uploaded to the BigOven website or shared on Facebook, and in turn, you can fill your virtual recipe box with other users' recipes at a click of the "import" button. Users can tag recipes for easy searching, export them into a comprehensive shopping list, or compile favorites into a custom cookbook that looks professionally done (though it costs an extra $29.95 or more).
Home cooking is entering the twenty-first century, and these three offerings show that there's something out there for everyone, from amateur foodies to professional chefs. Have computer, will cook!
