Restaurant Critic Pens Memoir on Lifelong Struggle with Food

As outgoing New York Times restaurant critic, Frank Bruni, prepares to leave his longtime post, he's getting quite a bit of publicity for other reasons as well—the release of his revealing third book, a memoir entitled Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater.
Among the most startling aspects of the book is Bruni's confession that he, a gourmand by profession, had struggled with an eating disorder and obsessed over his weight throughout his life. Even as a child, he ate voraciously, and as he grew older, he remained in denial about the extent of his problems, getting drawn in by fad diet after fad diet, yet still binge-eating and remaining overweight.
Over the years he spent reviewing restaurants, however, not only did he win over skeptics uncertain of his ability to take on the role of food critic, he also learned to master his own love-hate relationship with eating.
Now, he says in an interview with the Associated Press, "Having been through everything I describe in the book, I am fully aware and I struggle to remain conscious of the consequences."
