Opportunities for Culinary Institute of Arts Students to Get Involved

If you're a professional chef who wants to use your cooking skills for a good cause, or if you're a student at a culinary institute of arts and seeking an opportunity to gain more kitchen experience, then take a closer look at Operation Frontline. Operation Frontline is a nationwide non-profit program created by the anti-hunger organization Share Our Strength, and its purpose is to teach families with limited resources to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious meals at home. Both childhood obesity and child hunger are pernicious problems in communities throughout the country, but Operation Frontline wants to change that.

With local programs in eighteen states and counting, Operation Frontline is making significant strides toward its goal. Ending childhood hunger is an aim that everyone can get behind, and for those in culinary careers, involvement in a food-related volunteer program can be especially rewarding. Local Operation Frontline coordinators are always on the lookout for chefs and nutrition professionals to teach classes and share their expertise.

Getting involved as a teacher is a particularly good opportunity for chefs with an interest in teaching at a culinary institute of arts or other cooking school. A recent Operation Frontline cooking class at the Los Angeles Center for Community and Family Services focused on low-cost recipes designed to appeal to kids, including Haitian chicken, chocolate-dipped fruit and banana-and-peanut butter quesadillas.

Even if you aren't a culinary professional, volunteers are always needed in other capacities, such as advising on finances, setting up and cleaning up for classes and events, and shopping for food, as well as on the levels of donation, sponsorship and organization. More information is available at the Operation Frontline website.
