Three Illinois high school students received offers of up to $42,000 each in scholarships for a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Culinary Arts degree program after their team won gold medals at this year's national Culinary Arts STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) competition.

The purpose of the STAR Culinary Arts event is to recognize student participants "for their ability to work as members of a team to produce a quality meal using industrial culinary arts/food service techniques and equipment." To prepare for the competition, student teams work with STAR program partners, including well-known culinary institutions such as Le Cordon Bleu, The Culinary Institute of America, and The International Culinary Schools at The Art Institutes.

The competition included 41 student teams from occupational culinary arts and food service training programs around the country. The winning team, representing the state of Illinois and coached by Kendall College's School of Culinary Arts, was recognized at a ceremony that took place in July during the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America's (FCCLA) 2009 National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

In addition to the substantial scholarships offered to the winning high school team, all the other students who competed at the national level in the STAR Culinary Arts competition received offers of up to $9,000 each from Kendall College for the same Bachelor of Arts in Culinary Arts degree program.
