The world of culinary arts has become popular during the last few years, and now some high school grads are considering culinary school an option they'd like to pursue.

Thanks to exposure created by the recent film Julie & Julia and the book upon which it was partly based, My Life in France, the culinary arts have been a popular topic of conversation lately, as have been culinary schools.

In fact, Meryl Streep, who starred in the film, and Nora Ephron, who wrote and directed it, were recently presented with honorary diplomas by a famous culinary school. Streep received hers for her portrayal of Julia Child in the movie, the accomplished chef who passed away a few years ago. Ephron was awarded hers for having skillfully adapted Child's story into a film.

The American food preparation industry employed 3.1 million people in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Because executive chef positions are highly sought-after, post-high school education and training can give you a competitive edge for advanced cooking positions.
